Sharp, stabbing pain on the little-finger side of the wrist can make surprisingly ordinary movements difficult. Turning a door handle, opening a jar, or pushing yourself up from a chair suddenly becomes something you think about before you do it.
One possible cause is an injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex, or TFCC. This structure helps stabilize the wrist and supports the transfer of load between the forearm and hand. When it is irritated or injured, the problem may not look dramatic from the outside. The wrist simply starts refusing certain movements.
During rehabilitation, I am usually less interested in how quickly the pain disappears than in how the wrist gradually regains function. Early on, this may mean reducing irritating loads and modifying everyday movements. Later, rehabilitation can progress toward controlled mobility, strengthening, and restoring stability.
This is where people often rush.
The moment the wrist feels a little better, there is a temptation to test it. Lift something heavier. Twist the forearm further. Try the movement that caused the pain in the first place. Sometimes that small test is enough to bring the symptoms back.
Recovery from a TFCC injury is not always a straight line. A good day can be followed by a more painful one. That does not automatically mean rehabilitation has failed. But persistent or increasing pain, a feeling of instability, painful clicking, or significant loss of movement should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
Exercises and rehabilitation equipment should match the individual injury and the current stage of recovery. What feels appropriate for one person may simply be too much for another.
